We started Athena by leveraging technology that used existing security cameras and AI software to detect visible weapons. Soon after, we expanded to concealed gun detection through high sensitivity infrared thermal sensors that act as an additional deterrent and additional method of finding concealed objects. What’s Included in Athena’s Gun Detection Systems

Concealed Gun Detection

Athena's Gun Detection System now has a option for a Walk-Through Metal Detector sensor leverages similar technologies to our Elevated Temperature Detection System, except you can use two 384pixel thermal cameras to get both the back and front of someone's body, two pillars that detect magnetic fields of alloys, visual light sensor to use AI  and to alert and report on the system.   The thermal imaging cameras convert the energy in the infrared wavelength into a visible light display; all objects above absolute zero emit thermal infrared energy, so thermal cameras can passively see all objects, regardless of ambient light. When there is a concealed object under a person's clothing, the thermal camera can possibly see the object, if the temperature differentiation is greater than the sensitivity of the imager. This technology is reliant on the difference in temperature of the object vs radiant infrared thermal emanating from the body printing on the clothing. For this system we still utilize an iPad for the visual camera and computer, as well as an HSRP to maintain accuracy in ambient temperature. Our Gun Detection System is the most complete system in the market place when it comes to detecting a weapon out in the open.

How to Test Athena's Gun Detection System: First, record Ambient Temperature (Ie. air temperature); it works best in rooms 65 - 75 degrees F. Next, Have the person walk though the two pillars facing the thermal and visual camera and see alerts on Apple iPad screen if there is a threat detected under the clothing or in a bag.  Our new  Walk-Through Metal Detector system now even works with muti layers of clothing and even if you have a bag.

Visible Gun Detection

Athena’s Visible Gun Detection System option is the basis for how our company was established. It leverages existing security cameras a company has already set up, and either a Tower or Rackmount Appliance to store the camera streams and the AI software that detects when someone pulls out a gun. Athena has ‘trained’ the AI to detect over 900 different guns.

Athena’s Elevated Temperature Detection System Can:

The Athena's Concealed Weapons Detection System engineered to detect a wide range of mass casualty threats like handguns, shotguns, and rifles with out stopping so users of the system can just walk through this medal detector.


Athena's walk through metal detector system passes the Federal Standard for accuracy and is 10x faster than legacy metal detectors.  The system uses multiple sensors to both detect a threat, as well as identify and then ignore harmless personal items, so that people can walk-through without removing phones, watches, belts, batteries, and other personal items. The sensors include magnetometer, induction, lidar, thermal, visual camera, and artificial intelligence technologies. It is turnkey, Athena provides everything software and hardware.  The system can be set up outdoors and can be mobile for event type security. 


The walk through metal detector is designed to scan one person at a time, walking at normal speed, through the pillars and towards the thermal imaging camera. The maximum number of people is about 1 per second, or 3,600 people per hour as the maximum flow rate. The system can be configured to show “Clear”, if nothing is detected and show and say “Not Clear”, if the algorithm detects a possible threat. This alarm can be Auditory, Visual, and the alarm notification can be sent immediately to those who need it wherever they are: Security Operation Center, mobile phone App, computer-based browser, Video Management System (VMS), Access Control, or integrated with other business software.  


Most clients utilize the option to send proactive alerts to a predetermined escalation path, if someone walks in with a weapon. The alert contains the location, date/time stamp, and a visual picture. 


Athena is a workforce multiplier because of its alert system.  Think of it as a grocery store cashier managing 8 lanes versus just one.

The default security level sensitivity setting on the system is expected to find mass casualty weapons such as handguns, rifles, shotguns, and many bombs. This default setting passes the Federal Standards test 100% of the time. This rigorous testing found the Federally defined target piece, which represents a handgun and is called the “AM7” definition, 100% of the time, in many orientations, from high to low.  The testing is rigorous to ensure a highly capable design. 


The customer has the option to increase or decrease the sensitivity according to the use-case and customer goals.  The system uses security levels corresponding to an international standard.  Customers get to consider what the optimum trade-off is. The default setting is to maximize the likelihood of finding the “AM7” type of handgun (or larger style), while also discriminating and not alerting on mobile phones, keys, common personal items. In order to be able to catch the AM7 Target handgun barrel of hardened steel 100% of the time, and also allow the free flow of common person items is the goal.  In terms of the nuisance rate of false alarms, we have observed that in the average crowd, a rate of about 5%. So in a group of about 100 people going through, we have averaged about 5 that set off the alarm (for a range of reasons)  that do not have a weapon.


In layman's terms, here are the five options for Security Level Sensitivity Settings: 


  • Large Long Guns Only

  • Medium Long Guns (and also searches for large guns)

  • Small Long Guns (and also searches for medium, and large weapons)

  • Handguns (and also searches for all the above), which is the default setting to find the AM7 characteristics discussed above.

  • Large Handguns (and also searches for all the above)

Visible Gun Detection: The accuracy of the system may depend on many factors, such as the cameras being used in conjunction with the system, the distance of the weapon from the camera, and the light condition of the environment. The following list provides some system specifications and environmental factors that are necessary in order to obtain a similar level of accuracy as described in the tests above when using the Athena Security’s Gun Detection System: a camera with a range between 30 feet and 300 feet should be used, 100 pixels or more should be on the target, a lighting of 140 Lux or more should be in the environment, 60% of the weapon should be visible to the camera, and a camera capable of capturing eight frames per second or more should be used. A three second delay should also be expected before the system will provide an alert after it detects a potential threat.

Concealed Gun Detection: Subjects must walk though our detection pillars and wait for the answer at the end of about 5 feet away on the  Apple iPad.  System can be person less or can have someone monitoring the iPad or iPhone app for alerts.   Furthermore, all jackets, hoodies, and outwear can now be worn and does not have to be removed; the system's thermal sensitivity is only designed to work through one layer of cotton or less but now that Athena has added more sensors we can see though it all.   Jacket or no jacket.  It is meant for a normal indoor or outdoor temperature range.  **The walk though system can now scan the whole body and no need to stop and remove medal objects like keys etc for more information on our new walk through metal detector goto our concealed weapons page
